Fuel Tech is a world leading supplier of nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction and urea reagent technologies. We engineer ULTRA systems to safely generate high-quality diluted ammonia for SCR systems and flue gas conditioning applications by thermally decomposing urea. Built for reliability and long-term performance, ULTRA systems provide a user-friendly solution for onsite ammonia generation. We have successfully installed hundreds of systems worldwide, using a variety of heat sources, including electric heaters, natural gas burners, external flue gas heat exchangers and direct flue gas.

Safe, simple onsite ammonia production
Fuel Tech’s ULTRA system generates dilute ammonia, then delivers it to the SCR system through an ammonia injection grid (AIG). Metering urea into a decomposition chamber controls ammonia generation, and the generation rate responds quickly to changes in urea flow. The ULTRA system is straightforward. It comprises a blower, heat source, decomposition chamber, urea storage, urea metering and process controls, ensuring efficient and reliable operation.
Turnkey solutions that optimize results
Fuel Tech designs the ULTRA system ready for installation with minimum disruption. We customize it to meet the specific needs of each application. In addition to natural gas, potential heat sources include electric heaters for smaller systems and natural gas or propane burners for larger installations. For enhanced energy efficiency, we can use pre-heated combustion air directly, or in combination with a heat exchanger, to get the required process air to the right conditions. Sites can receive aqueous urea or generate it onsite by mixing granular or concentrated urea with condensate or demineralized water. Operators must follow quality standards for the water used in urea solution preparation to avoid any adverse effects on SCR catalyst performance.
ULTRA-EX™ Utilizes Hot Gas Turbine Exhaust as a Heat Source
High temperature exhaust gas from the combustion turbine is extracted from the heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), directed to the Decomposition Chamber, and returned to the flue gas path. The extracted flue gas, which is drawn from the HRSG using a high temperature blower, thermally decomposes the concentrated urea solution that is injected and distributed in the ULTRA chamber. The temperature of the flue gas typically is greater than 800°F and is particulate free. As with our other ULTRA systems, the urea injection rate is varied in response to changes in ammonia demand, but the total flow rate of the NH3/air mixture remains relatively steady.
ULTRA-QS™ Quick Start Process for SCR Operation Within Minutes
ULTRA-QS™ can rapidly respond to changes in the ammonia demand rate for combustion units using SCR technology to control NOx emissions. In addition, the system can inject urea and produce ammonia for the SCR within minutes of receiving the operating permission. The startup time will often be faster than the actual gas turbines and HRSGs, which have heat-up requirements to avoid thermal stress on the HRSG and the SCR catalyst from rapid temperature increase.
