Oil-fired units may run a residual fuel oil-water emulsion for reduction of boiler gas particulate and NOx. Fuel Tech is a renowned specialist in mechanically sheared water droplet emulsions and the Company has been extremely successful in installing programs with 8%-10% water emulsions. This represents the level that strikes an optimal balance between oil heat content (BTU value) and the positive effects on the combustion process. This water level will yield an 8%-10% reduction in NOx emissions. To maintain the proper emulsion, a proprietary Fuel Tech stabilizer is used to prevent coalescence of the 4 - 10 micron water droplets.
